The 4 Human States - How To Feel Fully Alive

Updated: May 22, 2021

4 HUMAN STATES

One of the most powerful forces in the world is human emotion. Human emotion creates the capacity for both inspiring self sacrifice and irrational destruction. I like to call the current emotional condition your "personal state."

If you've ever shocked yourself with your ability to perform unusually well or said something irrational to sabotage a relationship; your actions were most certainly influenced by the personal state you were in.

When you realize how much your state influences your actions and learn that you can take responsibility for it you will never look at any situation the same way.

THE 4 HUMAN STATES

1) Passive State

Passive state is what you are in when you are in the room physically but somewhere else mentally. Most people spend the majority of their time and life in "passive state".

Here are a few actions of someone in Passive State:

  • Checking social media at work

  • Watching YouTube in bed to wind down

  • Drinking alcohol to ease stress

  • Reading a post / article on your phone during family time

  • Daydreaming to avoid conflict

  • Investigating an unimportant topic to escape expectation

  • Eating heavy carbohydrates or sugar

  • Laying down on the couch looking for something to watch

Someone who is in passive state will likely be characterized by one or more of the following:

  • Annoyed

  • Distracted

  • Indifferent

  • Entertained

2) Present State

Present state is one of the healthiest and most sustainable conditions that you can be in. To be fully present is to be completely immersed with your 5 senses in the present moment.

Here are a few actions of someone in Present State:

  • Giving full eye contact during a conversation

  • Reacting sincerely with laughter during a well delivered story

  • Sitting in your backyard watching the wind blow in the trees

  • Aiming down the sights of a hunting rifle

  • Taking handwritten notes during a lecture

  • Breathing fully into your diaphragm

Someone who is in Present State will likely be characterized by one or more of the following:

  • Happy

  • Aware

  • Peaceful

  • Interested

3) Weak State

Weak state is without doubt the most difficult state to break, the most destructive to be in, and easiest to choose. Weak state is how you behave at your worst.

Here are a few actions of someone in Weak State:

  • Unconsciously raising your voice during conflict

  • Intimidating someone into getting them to do what you want

  • Retreating into pornography

  • Allowing the other drivers on the road to provoke you

  • Complying with something you don't agree with to avoid conflict

  • Aggressively steamrolling someone in a friendly sports game

  • Attempting to prove to someone how important you are

  • Continuously fishing for affirmation or feedback

Someone who is in Weak State will likely be characterized by one or more of the following:

  • Self-Conscious

  • Ashamed

  • Threatened

  • Angry

4) Peak State

Peak state is the elusive condition where you feel like the most bold, motivated, and generous version of yourself. Peak state is how you behave at your best.

Here are a few actions of someone in Peak State:

  • Lifting more weight than usual

  • Sincerely complimenting someone that can do nothing for you

  • Moving an audience to tears with a touching story

  • Being able to discern the deep meaning behind what people are saying

  • Losing yourself in leading a vibrant meeting leaving your team inspired to go overtime

  • Feeling the prompting to give someone money and doing it

Someone who is in Peak State will likely be characterized by one or more of the following:

  • Bold

  • Alert

  • Strong

  • Generous

Application:

  1. Begin matching your behaviors with the state you are in

  2. Get a mentor who will aid in challenging you to grow

  3. Develop daily private disciplines that aide in facilitating the best version of yourself
